Phoenix Suns all-time steal leaders
Shawn Marion is second on the Phoenix Suns franchise steals list with 1,245.
The Phoenix Suns have hosted plenty of capable defenders on their rosters since the franchise’s inception in 1968. Here’s a closer look at the top five steal leaders in the team’s history:
1. Alvan Adams, 1975-88 (1,289 steals)
Alvan Adams’ well-rounded career stay in Phoenix showcased his extensive skills on both ends of the floor. Adams impacted his team across the stat sheet, and on the defensive end, he climbed to the top of this list by averaging what would be a career-high 1.5 steals per contest as a rookie and following it up with between 1.0 and 1.4 steals per game for all but one of his remaining 12 seasons.
2. Shawn Marion, 1999-08 (1,245 steals)
Shawn Marion spent the first nine years of his career in Phoenix, garnering four All-Star nods along the way. Marion earned those accolades with what were extremely well-rounded stat lines, including on the defensive end. Marion averaged between 1.7 and a career-high 2.3 steals per game beginning with his second season in Phoenix, providing at least 2.0 per contest in six campaigns.
3. Walter Davis, 1977-88 (1,040 steals)
Hall of Famer Walter Davis made the biggest mark of his successful NBA tenure during his decade-plus in Phoenix, where he arrived as the fifth overall pick in 1977. In addition to his offensive exploits, Davis stood out on the opposite end of the floor by averaging between 1.2 and a career-high 1.9 steals per contest in nine of his Suns seasons.
4. Kevin Johnson, 1988-98, 2000 (1,022 steals)
Kevin Johnson spent all but half a season of his NBA career with the Suns, where he was a reliable source of scoring and rebounding for the bulk of his impressive team tenure. Johnson was also a reliable defender, as he provided between 1.5 steals over his 12 seasons with the Suns.
5. Dan Majerle, 1988-95, 2001-02 (811 steals)
Dan Majerle was a Suns fixture for nearly a decade when combining both of his team stints. Majerle averaged 1.2 steals per game as a rookie, and he went on to average between that figure and a career-high 1.7 steals per contest in each of the remaining six seasons of his first Suns stint. Majerle returned to the Suns for his final season in the NBA and averaged 1.4 steals throughout his career with the Suns.
